12-The SUN. Flagstaff. Arizona, Sunday. June 3. 1979 Snowsharks Open Summer Season Monday Despite the inadequate facilities in the Flagstaff area, the Snowsharks have two current swimmers that have established themselves among the top swimmers in their respective age groups in Arizona.

Alan Coffelt, a sophomore at Flagstaff High School, recorded a second place finish in the last state championship meet. Eight-year-old Tommy Spangler also captured a runnerup spot in the past state championships in the 50-yard back stroke. Both will swim for the Snowsharks this summer. An $8-a-month and a $10-a-season fee is charged for youngsters interested in joining the Snowsharks. These costs are charged to pay operating and traveling expenses as well as the coachs salary.

For more information on tryouts for the Snowsharks summer squad contact Pickering at 779-2181 or Spangler at 526-3808. by Dennis Pickering, a recent graduate from Northern Arizona University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in recreation with an acquatics emphasis. Pickering has just completed his first full year as coach of the Snowsharks. He is a former Oregon state 100-meter breast stroke champion and runnerup in the same event in the Northwestern championships. Pickering has been a registered Water Safety Instructor for three years and a former competitive swimmer for eight years.

According to Spangler, the group swims an average of 46 weeks per year with the more experienced team members swimming as many as three and four miles per day. six days a Dion Connelly, a 1979 graduate of Flagstaff High School and a long-time member of the Snowsharks, was recently awarded a swimming scholarship from Arizona State University, and will be one of the few members of the Sun Devil squad next season that com- The Flagstaff Snowsharks summer swimming session begins Monday with tryouts scheduled from a m. at the Eiks Club Pool, said Tom of the Snowsharks Parents Organization. The Snowsharks first summer meet is tentatively scheduled for June 23 or 30 and the organization plans to host three meets during the summer months, said Spangler. The team will also be represented in the Arizona Junior Olympics and the Arizona State Championships this summer.

-We re looking for kids with an interest in competitive swimming, said Spangler, a Junior high school history teacher. We want kids that have a basic knowledge of swimming and are interested in competing. The Snowsharks advanced team will work out this summer from 7-9 a.m. and the B-team swimmers work out from each morning. The group is coached peted only for a swimming dub and not a school team.

Every year we have a couple of outstanding swimmers ill at least one age group," explains Spangler. For the most part though, our swimmers are average. The really strong swimmers and swim clubs are located in the valley, where there are as many as 400 members on a team and year-round training facilities. By contrast, the Flagstaff team fluctuates from 45-75 members and Spangler lays part of the blame for the lack of interest in competitive swimming in Flagstaff to the lack of facilities. As many as 20 teams have indicated that they would like to come to Flagstaff for an AAU invitational, said Spangler.

But neither the East Flagstaff Junior High School pool nor the Elks Gub Pool meet AAU standards. Hopefully the soon-to-be completed pool at Flagstaff High School will meet AAU requirements. Kemper Open Up 1 Th McGee, Stadler Tied For Third Round Lead leaders. McGee set a course record Thursday with an 11-under par 61 to hold the first day lead in the Kemper, but he fell back into the pack on Friday with a two-over par 74. Stadler had a 69 on Friday to go with his opening round 62.

The co-leaders agreed that both had blown chances to put the tournament title out of reach. Weve both had a chance to put it away, McGee said after his third round. Now its just another golf tournament. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (UPI) Jerry McGee, after a blistering 6-under-par 30 on the front nine, ran into bogey trouble Saturday and tied Craig Stadler with a 12-under par 204 for the third-round lead in the Kemper Open Golf Tournament.

McGee, with six birdies over a seven-hole stretch that began the second hole on the Quail Hollow Country Club layout, made the turn at 15-under-par, one stroke ahead of Stadler, the second-round leader who carded a one-over par 73. Stadler, still looking for his first victory since joining the tour in 1976, then gave McGee a two-stroke advantage with a bogey on the 10th hole, but McGee, en route to a 69 for the day, had back-to-back bogeys on 11 and 12 to drop back into a tie. McGee then bogeyed the par-3 17th hole when a three-foot putt failed to drop. McGees best previous finish this year was a tie for fifth in the Byron Nelson, and he has taken home less than 828,000 this year. Former U.S.

Open champion Jerry Pate turned in the days best round, an 8-under-par 64, that gave him sole possession of third place one stroke back of the FLAGSTAFF LITTLE LEAGUE TEAM WON LOSS Twins 7 0 Cubs 5 3 Dodgers 4 3 Mets ......2 4 Yankees 2 4 Cardinals 1 7 ,11 iQ- n.
