14 The SUN. Flagstaff. Arizona. Thursday. September 28, 1978 IMP fllCTWH 9 'fH illHW'Hlfl WHf i nrz.r- David Eisenhower Says Grandfather Had a Temper Similar to a Furnace first time Id heard of it, David said, grinning.

Oh, we were all shocked. "For a few days. But we got over it." Someone asked how Eisenhower got along with his vice president, Nixon. Rumors that Ike and Nixon intensely disliked each other were not true, he said. But he loved horses and when some got loose on the farm and tore up a golfing green that took three years to build, Ike, sitting on the porch, said seeing them romp was the most beautiful sight Id ever seen.

Everyone had expected the temper to explode. All 65 ex-associates of Eisenhower he has interviewed for the book remember the temper, David said, but no one remembers anything Ike said when he got mad. Once when he was young, he said, Eisenhower hired him to paint the barn. One day at lunchtime David got into a game of Hollywood bridge with a pal and it consumed most the afternoon. When Eisenhower came upon this display of idleness, I looked into the Bessemer furnace.

I remember two words: Youre fired. Later, Ike forgave his grandson. After Eisenhower died, when the family read Plain Speaking, a book in which Harry Truman first revealed that Eisenhower had a wartime girlfriend, Kay, Summersby, It was the WASHINGTON (UPI) -David Eisenhower, grandson of one president and son-in-law of another, says Dwight Eisenhower was a rawboned, shy, starchy figure who had a temper like a Bessemer furnace and whose famous grin masked his efforts to obscure himself. Smoking a cigarette, dropping its ash in a paper coffee cup, shrugging, talking rapidly and easily, David, 30, shared with an audience at the National Archives Wednesday night some of what hes learned about his grandfather in the past two years. Hes writing a book about him, and it might be done, he said with a memory-raising grin, in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 He called Ike granddad sometimes, or Eisenhower.

He spoke of Richard Nixon, his father-in-law, simply as "Nixon. Eisenhower was unpredictable, David said. Bruce Babbitt announced a new plan for aiding industrial development in the rural areas of the state and said Arizona is in danger of becoming a two-headed urban colossus with a weak and undernourished body. At a Casa Grande Town Hall meeting here Wednesday, Babbitt said his plan is aimed at balancing out a lopsided growth pattern in Arizona caused by concentration of development in the Phoenix and Tucson areas, Our office will take an aggressivie role in promoting industrial development in the other 12 counties, Babbitt said. Our highest priority will be in helping those communities which need assistance.

The advisory board of the Office of Economic Planning and Development will be directing its efforts toward rural assistance, recognizing that the large cities in Arizona have superior resources and that state efforts would only duplicate their work. The governor said his office is planning to consolidate all federal planning and economic development programs including the Four Corners Regional Commission, plus assistance from the Economic Development Administration, Farmers Home Administration and other sources into a single coordinated development effort and help each community develop a plan reflecting its own needs. Babbitt is the Democratic party nominee for governor in the November election Strike Could Delay City Well Project Construction in the form of the digging of trenches is under way on the 24-inch Lake Mary wellfield pipeline. WHITEWALLS ADD 4.75 PER TIRE attorney for Mulligan for work done out of court, and $25 per hour for courtroom work. Mangum also has tried to assist the defendant by arranging for him to meet a Flagstaff attorney who was not here at the time of the fire which destroyed the Flagstaff News office, since Mulligan contends Flagstaff attorneys familiar with the case from news accounts of it will be biased against him.

However, Mangum said, so far Mulligan has not taken full advantage of the assistance offered by the court, having failed to meet with one attorney the judge contacted this week on the publishers behalf. Mulligan is under indictment for arson, grand theft and insurance fraud in connection with the 1976, fire which destroyed his newspaper offices. He faces trial on the charges Nov. 14, whether he has an attorney by that time or not, Mangum said. Coconino County Superior Court Judge Richard K.

Manpm today explained why he will not appoint an attorney to represent Flagstaff News publisher Edward F. Mulligan entirely at county expenses. One reason is I want Mulligan to pay to the best of his ability, Judge Manpm said. I dont think he should get a totally free ride. He has assets, but they are not liquid, Manpm said, mentioning Mulligans equity in his home and his newspaper office.

The law (regarding appointment of counsel) speaks of an undue hardship," the judge said. It wouldn't be fair to compell him to sell all those things, to mount a defense, Mangum said. In an effort to help Mulligan obtain counsel something the judge said the court has done for other defendants in the past he said he has offered to guarantee payment of $20 per hour to an B78-14, C78-14, E78-14 Blackwells.
