16 The SUN, Flagstaff, Arizona, Sunday, September 11, 1977 vy- Here Comes the BRIDE! Today Through September 17 Sale Good Fall Stripes And 1 yd. to VA yds Knit Fabric Matching ribbing included the days they come to town for grocery shopping, laundering clothes and sightseeing in the area. Saturdays and Sundays McGrew is relief lookout at OLeary tower, leaving Monica to man Elden herself. They have to check the weather situation three times a day, at 8 a.m., and 1 and 5 p.m. Their survey includes checking wind speed, direction, temperatures and relative humidity factor.

"The weather conditions gives us a good idea of what might happen if we spot smoke, Monica said. The factors tell us what direction the fire might go- The rest of the time the McGrews cross-check other towers in the area and spend their time looking for smoke themselves. With the weather so dry we sometimes spot three or four smokes a day, Monica said. But it wasnt the McGrews who spotted the June 17 Mt. Elden fire.

The fire started on the pipeline which is our blind spot, they explained. The McGrews were working on the Boundary Fire at the time and the Elden fire was spotted from the Woody Mountain lookout. We werent too concerned at first, they said, but as the winds picked up with the low humidity we were worried the fire would come up the chute. And come up the chute it did. The fire control officers warned the McGrews to prepare to evacuate, then five minutes later told them to get in their car and drive to the roads fork at Devils Head Mountain.

They left immediately, without a radio, because it was electric rather than battery-operated. We stayed at Devils Head about 45 minutes, but without a radio we couldnt see what the fire was doing. We took it on ourselves to go back to the tower. Realizing how dangerous the fire was becoming, they grabbed some equipment from the tower and headed back down the mountain. They learned later the tower, the cabin and their belongings burned about 30 minutes after that.

Although the 60 m.p.h. winds and ungodly smoke were playing havoc with the mountainside, the McGrews said they felt safe the whole time. The fire was coming up the southwest side of the mountains, Monica said, and the road is on the north side. They gave us plenty of time to get out. By that time busloads of crewmen and pumpers were coming in and planes were dropping slurry on the roads.

But there was nothing they could do. Although the Elden fire destroyed all their belongings, the McGrews look forward to returning next year. When the winter weather and snowfall cause the lookouts closure in late November, they will take off in their travel trailer and return next spring. BY JANE LLOYD Sun Staff Reporter Dan and Monica McGrew find living at the top exciting the top of Mt. Elden that is.

The McGrews have lived atop Mt. Elden since April, manning the U.S. Forest Service fire lookout tower there five days a week. But living in such a confined area isnt boring for the retired Braniff airlines pilot and his wife, a former Braniff stewardess. They find the day-to-day lookout duties, the devastating Elden fire, numerous summertime lightning fires and everyday household chores and hobbies keep them quite busy.

McGrew, 53, retired last July from piloting and the couple moved to Arizona in November spending the winter in Tucson. Friends who had manned lookout towers for several years in the Coconino and Tonto national forests, told them about the job and they were convinced it was for them. They live in a 24-foot trailer provided by the U.S. Forest Service and work in a temporary box of a tower until the two structures, destroyed in the Elden fire, can be rebuilt next season. A typical day for the McGrews has Dan manning the tower mornings and Monica afternoons.

When not in the lookout, he works on woodworking hobbies and she tends to household chores. They both have two days a week, Wednesday and Thursday, off. Those are IT MR. AND MRS. VAALELE P.
