Metzenbaum said he was impressed by Mrs. OConnor, "particularly by her independence of spirit and her feistyness. Shell be a welcome addition to the Supreme Court. He said they did not discuss abortion, but touched on other areas, such as civil rights, civil liberties and antitrust.

Metzenbaum said she told him she had not had cases in those areas, but, "That does not bother me. There are more advantages to starting with a clean slate than to have started with a particular perspective. Following her selection by President Reagan, antiabortion forces launched an attack on abortion-related votes Mrs. O'Connor cast 10 years ago as an Arizona state senator. Fresh from a White House meeting where Reagan predicted she would win confirmation, the 51-year-old jurist was faced with a "March for Life demonstration at the Capitol.

She also encountered questions about her position on abortion in nearly every Senate office. Sen. Roger Jepsen, R-Iowa, said Mrs. OConnor declined comment when he sought her view of the high courts landmark 1973 decision that a woman has a constitutional right to an abortion. Iowas other Republican senator, Charles Grassley, a member of the Judiciary Committee, said he discussed with her the courts recent ruling that Utah may require that parents be notified if a teenage daughter seeks an abortion.

"You could read into her response that she had respect for what the (Utah) legislature did, he said. Only Sen. Alan Simpson, another Judiciary Committee member, said he didnt care "one whit about her view on abortion. Meanwhile, Cal Thomas, vice president of the Moral Majority, denied reports the conservative organization is falling into line behind Mrs. O'Connor.

"Moral Majority continues to have substantive concerns about the nomination of Judge OConnor and believes without equivocation that the questions Moral Majority and other pro-life and traditional family groups have raised concerning O'Connor's position on abortion need to be answered, Thomas said. "Until the legitimate concerns of grass-roots Americans are answered, the personal credibility of Judge OConnor and the confidence of the American people in the Supreme Court will be in jeopardy, he said.
