Wednesday, January 29, 1947 Page Five ARIZONA DAILY SUN, flagstaff, THIS CURIOUS WORLD By WILLIAM FERGUSON It Won't Be Long Now Women Vets Eligible For Medical Benefits Former GI Janes not only are eligible for all the benefits granted their male counterparts, but they are one up on their khaki clad and seagoing brothers. Women veterans, unlike men, may receive private hospitalization for non-service connected disabilities when VA facilities are not available. This is a privilege given to male veterans only when they are suffering from disabilities incurred or aggravated by their service in the armed forces. This additional benefit was given to women veterans by an executive order in 1933, when existing VA hospitals did not have adequate accommodations for the women who served during World War I. The VA hospital at Phoenix has a special waid set aside for the care of women veteians, but the privilege of private hospitalization elsewhere in the state may still be authoi lzed when necessary.

Former Collegian Visits Here Tuesday First Lieutenant Woodrow Lewis of the U. S. Marines, former president of the Hiking club of the col- lege here, visited on the campus Tuesday, stopping over on his way to Quuntico, where he will attend a quartermaster school. He arrived here Monday night and left today. At the time he was attending college, Lt.

Lewis made his home at Window Rock, vvheie his stepfather, John McPhee was public relations director for the Navajo Indian reservation. He graduated in 1941, taking pre-medical course of study. Following graduation, he entered the navy V-5 program in June, 1941. The next June he entered the volunteer army training program. Then, to round out Ins military experience, he entered the U.

S. Marine Corps in December, 1942. In May, 1943, he received his icomniission. While at Quantico in 1943 lie became married to a New Mexico girl. Williams March Of Dimes Opened Monday Evening (By The SUN'S Own Service) WILLIAMS The drive for the March of Dimes was launched Monday evening at the meeting of the Lions club.

Under the supervision of Mrs. Mary Stevenson, chairman of the drive in Williams, cans have been placed in prominent places in the various business houses. Proceeds from the basketball game Tuesday evening between Holbrook i and Williams will be added to the fund. Saturday morning the senior Girl Scout troop under the leadership of Mrs. Miles Cureton, with the Order of Rainbow Girls and their sponsor, Mrs.

Chas. Way, will assemble at the office of the Chamber of Commerce to assist Mrs. Stevenson with the drive. The girls will be divided into groups, and assigned to various parts of town for a house-to-house canvass, while others will be stationed in the downtown area. Girls will be in evidence all day to receive contributions.

29 (AP) Daniel S. Voorhees, curly haired and husky, was booked today in the county jail on suspicion of murder after, police said, he signed a confession to the sadistic mutilation slaying of beautiful Elizabeth Short. Detective Ed Barrett displayed a sheet of paper on which was written: I did kill Beth Short. It was signed Daniel S. Vorhees.

Voorhees, 33 and blue-eyed, surrendered to homicide detail officers late last night after telephoning them he would be waiting on a downtown street corner. Miss Short, 22, was known to her friends as the Black Dahlia because of her penchant for flower headdress and black raiment. She was found dead in a vacant lot Jan 15. Her nude body had been battered and bisected at the diaphragm. PHOENIX, Jan.

29 (AP) The Phoenix police identification bureau said last night a man who gave his name as Dan Voorhees had been arrested here five times. The bureau said that Voorhees, when he was questioned in 1942 in connection with a Phoenix assault to commit rape, gave his age as 25. He was turned over to county authorities, and the police records showed no disposition of the case. Gib Irrigation Project Change Proposed, Solon WASHINGTON, Jan. 29 (AP) A bill which Stnator McFarland (D-Ariz.) says may settle some of the conti oveisial questions regarding division of the Colorado river water was ready today.

The measure, which was the subject of extended committee hearings in the House last session, would set new borders for the Gila irigation project in western Arizona. The bill would reduce the total acreage of the project from to 141,000, would abandon plans for development of additional acreage on Yuma Mesa and substitute 75,000 acies in the Gila Val'ev, to be known as the Well-ton-Mohawk division. 29 (AP) Five Army prisoners hacksawed their way through iron bars today and escaped from priso non Governors Island in New York harbor, U. S. Aimy authorities said. A hacksaw was found in their cell which two bars had been cut away, the Army said, and a sixth prisoner who had declined to join them in the escape was found in the cell. The five were btliev-ed have swum to a row boat moored 200 feet off the island and rowed to slioie.
