1 STEEL ROCK WOOD CONCRETE AP Newsfeatures NEW YORK Getting the nations homes back into tip-top shape is going to be one of the biggest jobs for the construction industry. Between $2,400,000,000 and is expected to be spent on repairing single-family nonfarm houses tins year, according to the Tile Council of America. This bill will include roof repairs to more than 2,345,000 homes and the replacement or overhauling of heating equipment in some the council estimates. Still another 1,793,000 houses will have showers installed, bathrooms tiled or repairs made to water piping, according to the report. Painting is by far the most common home repair, the study showed.

Either the exterior or some room of the interior is painted in almost a third of the nations single-family homes each year. The number of single-family nonfarm homes in the United States has risen from 17,510,847 in 1940 to an estimated 19,830,000 as of November, 1940, the Tile Council states. (AP) A motorist can see an unexpected object at night only half as far ahead as an expected one. Surprise is one of three main factors which influence the safety of night driving, according to a booklet, Danger in the Dark, published by Aetna Life Companies.

The others are speed, which cuts the stopping distance 20 feet for each added 10 miles an hour, and glare. The faster you drive at night, says the booklet, the more you reduce the distance you can recognize the danger ahead. Tests show the color of road surfaces seem to have little effect on the distance at which a driver can see an object ahead. The conclusions are based on tests conducted at General Electrics Nela Park engineering department, Cleveland. KANSAS CITY, Feb.
