10 The SUN, Flagstaff, Arizona, Tuesday, December 16, 1980 Rams Sparkle; Down Cowboys the record by an opponent against Dallas of 527. The Cowboys gained 271 yards, but most of that came long after the issue was decided. In the first half, Dallas had just 91 yards to the Rams 333. ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) If the Los Angeles Rams spend today hanging upside down from tree limbs in celebration of their 38-14 rout of Dallas, no one should wonder why.

They played possum all week. For seven days the Rams moaned, complained, limped and screamed, Their game last week against the Buffalo Bills left them in worse shape than the last holdouts at the Alamo, they said. Surely, with so many key players injured they wouldnt stand a chance against the awesome Cowboy machine, they tried to convince everyone. Well, they convinced the Cowboys. When the opening kickoff for Monday night's nationally televised game finally came, the Rams stopped limping and started hitting and proceeded to maul the Cowboys for 60 minutes.

They said they were hurt and our guys believed them, said Dallas coach Tom Landry. "Our guys looked at their injury list and figured this would be an easy one. The Rams lost a couple of people and our guys took them too lightly." The Rams who were too hurt to play Fred Dryer, Jim Youngblood and Pat Thomas were hardly missed as reserves filled in beautifully. Those who claimed injuries all week but still played Nolan Cromwell, Vince Ferragamo, George Andrews and Codie Jones were spectacular. Ferragamo passed for 275 yards and three touchdowns to lead the offense, while Cromwell had one of three Los Angeles interceptions, two of them turned into quick touchdowns, to spark the swarming defense.

Ferragamo had a pair of The Rams scoring came on a 4-yard run by Cullen Bryant, a 34-yard run by rookie Jewerl Thomas, TD passes of 40 yards to Billy Waddy, 34 yards to Preston Dennard and 1 yard to Victor Hicks, and a 27-yard field goal by Frank Corral. TD passes and threw for 229 yards in the opening half as the Rams, 10-5, bolted to a 28-0 lead and coasted to the win, giving them a playoff berth for the eighth consecutive year. They host the Atlanta Falcons, who ended the Rams' seven-year reign as NFC West champions, in their final regular season game this Sunday. Dallas, 11-4, which had already clinched a playoff berth, hosts Philadelphia Sunday and must beat the Eagles by at least 26 points to capture the NFC East title. If not, they face the Rams Dec.

Los Angeles compiled 517 yards, barely missing Winfield, Yankees Reach Agreement The agreement represented another coup for Steinbrenner, who in the past has signed such free agents at Jim Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson and Rich Gossage. It also atoned for an infrequent failure which Steinbrenner suffered recently in losing pitcher Don Sutton to the Houston Astros. The owner won despite the spirited efforts of the New York Mets, who remained in the bidding until the very last, meeting with Winfield on Sunday. Atlanta, Cleveland and Houston also bid seriously for the slugger, who was selected by 10 teams in the free agent draft in the first week of November. youngsters.

He says money was not the primary concern. Winfields ability to play all three outfield positions could help the Yankees with one dilemma, namely, what to do with a pair of glamorous, slugging, right fieldgrs. A fellow named Reggie Jackson is the other. The acquisition also raised the possibility that owner George Steinbrenner, noted for thinking big, might try for a super outfield by trading for Boston center fielder Fred Lynn. Jackson, who has played right field on and off since signing with the Yankees in 1977, welcomed Winfield and indicated he could help.

"I think its super, said Jackson. "I say any time you can afford a player of his kind of talent, you get him. As for Winfield, he appeared unworried where he would play. Theyll find a spot for me, said Winfield. Left field is a position that would probably be looked into for me.

NEW YORK (UPI) Dave Winfields least-publicized gift his versatility could wind up being the factor that helps the New York Yankees the most. He can play any outfield position, manager Gene Michael said of Winfield, who Monday resolved his free agent status by agreeing to a 10-year, $13-million contract with the Yankees. And I know he can hit anywhere. The way he runs, he could even bat leadoff. "He'H probably hit in the RBI positions, either third, fourth, or fifth.

If he's an RBI man, he's going to get his RBI. It doesnt matter where he hits in the order. I think that's overrated anyway. I just know were going to have someone hitting in front of him and someone hitting behind him. The likelihood of protection in the order was just one of the factors that influenced Winfield to sign with the Yankees.

Another was their winning tradition, and still another was the chance to help his fund for underprivileged Winfield, 29, a native of St. Paul, played eight years with the Padres, amassing a .284 average with 154 home runs and 626 RBI. He has also appeared in four consecutive All-Star games beginning in 1977 and his best year was in 1979, when he led the National League with 118 RBI and hit 34 homers with a .308 average. PHOENIX (UPI) Former Arizona State football coach Frank Kush reportedly is ready to begin serious negotiations with two Canadian Football League teams for a coaching position. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats has the edge over the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Arizona Republic reported Tuesday. The newpaper quoted an unnamed source who said Kush planned to meet with Hamilton General Manager Ralph Sazio either Tuesday or Wednesday in Chicago. Sazio said he did have a meeting tentatively scheduled with Kush, but would not say when or where. Gordon Staseson, president of the Saskatchewan team, said his team would not get in a bidding war with Hamilton.

But he added he hoped Kush looked his team over before he chooses. "I suppose were going to have to wait until he (Kush) hears from Hamilton, Staseson said. Hopefully, he'll wait and listen to us before he makes a decision. He said his team "could not go far financially in any competitive bidding against Hamilton. Sazio said he would contact Kush Tuesday after talking with Hamilton owner Harold Ballard.

The Republic quoted unnamed sources as saying Hamilton has already offered Kush a contract, but Sazio and Kush have denied that report. Sazio repeated Monday that Kush is one of three candidates. The other two are Hamilton assistant coach Jim Eddy and an assistant coach with a National Football League team. Ah, but what a battle it is. One point separated the top two teams for the second consecutive week in the ratings released Monday, and the only thing that appears certain is that the 42 coaches on the board have much higher opinions of both Kentucky and DePaul than they do of any of the other top teams undefeated or not. Kentucky, which last week nipped the Blue Demons, 590-589, despite receiving four fewer first-place ballots, held on to the top slot by the slimmest of margins again Monday. This time, each school received 21 first-place votes from the 42-member Board of Coaches, but the Wildcats picked up one more third-place mention to claim the No. 1 honor.
