North Carolina, 29-8, never came closer than seven points after that. The convincing victory was a fitting climax to an their first national championship since 1957, eventually succumbed to the brilliant all-around play of Thomas. The sophomore AUAmerican shot 7-for-10 in the second half for 19 points. But it was Thomas' ball-hawking ability that turned the game around.

Thomas stole the ball four times in the second half, two of them early in the period when the Big Ten champions went on a 10-2 Randy Wittman, whose jumper at the first-half buzzer gave Indiana the lead for good at 27-26, its first lead of the game, added 16 points and Landon Turner had 12. Its last crown came on the same Spectrum floor in 1976. In the consolation game, Virginia used some timely foul shooting and 25 points from Jeff Lamp to defeat Louisiana State 78-74 for third place. Actually, the NCAA tournament committee had little choice on whether to play Monday nights game. The Spectrum was reserved for a Philadelphia 76ers playoff game tonight, plus most of the spectators were from out of town and had made plans to leave the city today. After meeting with NCAA officials and officials of both schools, Wayne Duke, chairman of the NCAA basketball committee, announced the game would be played some 30 minutes before the scheduled tipoff "based upon reports we have obtained in the past several minutes.

The Tar Heels, in their third title game under Smith and in search of PHILADELPHIA (UPI) They played a basketball game for the national collegiate championship Monday night while the minds of many were elsewhere. The fact that President Reagan was the target of a would-be assassins bullet earlier Monday was just beginning to sink in as the sellout crowd began pouring into the Spectrum. Many people asked reporters for the latest updates on the presidents condition in Washington. Yet they came to see a basketball game, and the NCAA decided to go on with its showcase contest despite pressures to postpone it. And in the end, it turned into Indianas showcase.

The Hoosiers, combining a 23-point performance by tournament MVP Isiah Thomas with their customary vise-like defense, repeated history with a 63-50. victory over North Carolina. But finally, about a half-hour before the scheduled 8.23 p.m. EST tipoff, the announcement came: The game was on. "Based upon the reports we have obtained in the past couple of minutes, we have decided to proceed as planned with the championship game," said Wayne Duke, chairman of the NCAA Division I basketball committee. "Following consultation with all officials, the tournament committee decided to proceed in that manner. The coaches of the competing teams were consulted separately concerning the matter.

In reality, the NCAA tournament committee didnt have much choice. The Philadelphia 76ers had reserved the Spectrum court for an NBA playoff game tonight. Shelly They were Bobby Knight and Dean Smith, the coaches of the two finalists. I did not know they (tournament officials) were considering not playing the game until I walked through that door, said Knight, the Indiana coach. I didnt know what was going to happen, said Smith of North Carolina.

The pressure Monday night to call off the NCAA finals was great. The Academy Awards had been postponed and the New York Stock Exchange closed early. As the president remained in surgery, rumors of the games postponement per Begin Tonight BY RANDY HOWARD Sun Staff Reporter The Coconino High School girls gymnastics team will entertain Flagstaff High School at 6 p.m. Wednesday, as the Panthers and the Eagles open the 1981 season in the CHS Gymnasium. Six members from each squad will be competing for individual and team honors in four events; the balance beam, the uneven bars, vaulting and the floor exercise.

Coconino Coach Scott Camponeschi said he looks for the Panthers to have a good year. Weve been working hard since November (1980) and weve got a good team this year. I think we'll do OK, Camponeschi said. I think we ll beat Flagstaff, but I don't like to say things like that a because jTjrc superstitious. The Coconino coach said he has nine Panthers fighting for the six team positions and leading the way is senior Mickelson.

"Shellys coming off an injury from last year and I think shell do well for us. Shes tops on the bars and has a lot of talent, Camponeschi said. Also number one on Camponeschis list is Yolanda Montoya. The Coconino senior took top honors in the floor exercise last year in the Class AA State Gymnastics Championships. "I think Yolanda will be better this year than she was last season.

Shes better in her bars routine and her vaulting has improved, the Panthers coach said. Sophomore Kim Kelly has moved up from the junior varsity and Camponeschi said she is a good vaulter. He added that Kelly needs to work on the. other events, but that she should improve as the season progresses. Debbie Hernandez is another sophomore on the varsity squad.

Camponeschi said Hernandez is also a good vaulter, but hasnt had much experience on the uneven bars. Were expecting a lot from Debbie (Hernandez) in the next few years. Shes young and has not had much experience, but she should be a good all-round competitor for us, Camponeschi said. Mickelson, Montoya, Kelly and Hernandez will be challenging for all-around honors for the Panthers, Camponeschi said. Tammy Wolfe holds the number five spot on the team and will compete in the floor exercise.

Camponeschi said Wolfe has really improved her work on the floor from last year. Janet Brown (beam), Camilla Liebe (floor and beam), Cree Saxer (floor and vault) and Debbie Jallaher (vault) are challenging for the teams number six spot for the Panthers meet with Flagstaff. The Flagstaff squad has only been working out for seven weeks and will have a young team on the floor Wednesday, first-year Eagles Coach Mitch Bycura said. We got a very late start this year. Normally, practice starts back in or two events, theyll have to put together four." The remaining three Eagles to compete in Wednesdays meet are Georgi Coffelt, Danni Duerson and Donna Gallegos.

Camponeschi added that the judges at the meet will be looking for technique and execution when compiling scores in each event. He said that on the uneven bars, the contestants will be judged on how fast they move through their routine. During the vaulting event, Camponeschi said pre-flight and after-flight height, as well as repulsion from the horse will be judged. He said points will be taken off for broken form, bent arms or legs. The Panthers coach said the balance beam poses the biggest problem for the gymnasts.

"Theres somewhat of a fear factor involved with the beam. The girls are working on a 4-inch-wide piece of wood and are sometimes afraid of falling off and getting hurt, Camponeschi said. In the floor exercise, Camponeschi said the judges will be looking for how high the performers tumble and their overall dance routine. November and weve lost nearly three months of practice time, Bycura said. The girls will have a real deficit going into this meet.

Of the eight Eagles competing on the team, only one is a senior. The remaining seven are juniors or sophomores, Bycura said. Were a very young team competitively and age-wise. Were just looking to put a team together that will continue to better its scores each week, Bycura said. Senior Kim Connelly is the oldest member of the team and shares top honros with junior Brenda Jamison.

Both Connelly and Jamison have had some experience. Connelly placed first in the Class AA-North Divisional meet last year on the uneven bars. Jamison took third in the floor exercise at the divisional last season. Bycura said that of the eight team members, three will not be able to compete because of injuries. He added that the five remaining Eagles compete for all-around honors.

It will take a lot of work from those five girls, the Eagles coach said. Instead of putting together a routine fQr one NBA Playoffs By United Press International The New York Knicks won 50 games this season but they find another number just as intriguing the eight straight victories with which Chicago closed its season. If we dont put pressure on their backcourt were in for a hell of a night, Knicks assistant coach Burth Beard said Monday in describing the challenge New York will face in its best-of-three NBA playoff mini-series beginning tonight against Chicago in Madison Square Garden. Theyve played good defense the times Ive seen them, continued Beard, who scouted the Bulls in their seasonending 101-97 victory over Indiana Sunday. Their defense has made their offense.

Theyre very strong, very physical. I think theyll try to intimidate us. The series will continue Friday in Chicago and return to New York, if necessary, on Sunday. In the other Eastern Conference playoff game, Indiana is at Philadelphia tonight. The Western Conference series opens Wednesday night with Houston at Los Angeles and Kansas City at Portland.

New York had not won 50 games in a season since 1972-73, the year the Knicks won their last title. To even dream of repeating, they must get past theBulls and their bruising height and strength. The Bulls front consists of 7-foot-2 center Artis Gilmore and forwards Dwight Jones, 6-10, and David Greenwood, 6-9'a. The job of defensing Gilmore goes to centers Bill Cartwright and Marvin Webster, who can either replace one another or play together in New Yorks Twin Tower alignment. Despite their height disadvantage, the Knicks believe they can control the game by exploiting an area of superiority the backcourt.

Williams and Michael Ray Richardson are matched against Reggie Theus and Bob Wilkerson. At Philadelphia, the 76ers must rebound from a 98-94 loss to Boston on Sunday that cost them a first-round bye and set up their meeting with the Pacers. Indiana, which also lost its season finale, finished third in the Central Division and sixth overall in the East with a 44-38 record. Philadelphia, which went to the NBA finals last season, defeated the Pacers six consecutive times this year. Los Angeles took three of five games from Houston during the regular season bqt the Rockets won the last meeting, in Los Angeles, with Moses Malone outplaying Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Portland lost the season series to Kansas City but could have an edge since the Kings just survived a grueling race with Houston and Golden State for the final two berths. The Vikes are 1-2 on the year and dropped their double-header conference opener to Antelope High School Saturday in Williams. Because of those losses, Williams Coach Rich Hoyt has made a decision about his pitching staff. Were going to go with sophomore pitching for the rest of the year, Hoyt said.

Sophomore Buddy Parenteau, 0-1, will head to the mound for the Vikings today. Weve been running into control problems with our pitching and I think inexperience is the key to that. We dont have a grade-A pitcher, but were building on that, Hoyt said. "Weve been hitting the ball well and our defense has been holding up, but you cant win ball games when you cant keep the other team off the bases, Hoyt said. Other than our pitching, were doing very well.

The Vikes coach said he has a partial lineup for todays game with the Cowboys. Ed Sandoval will be behind the plate for Williams. Scott Miller will play first base and Clay Barnes will be at shortstop. In the outfield, Greg Hoffman will play left field and Manuel Jaramillo will roam center field. Second base, third base and right field are open at this time, Hoyt said.

Hoyt added that if Parenteau gets in trouble on the mound, Cecil Cottolendy will be called on from the bullpen. In other action today, the Winslow High School Bulldogs entertain the Blue Ridge High School Yellowjacket3 at 3 p.m. in a non-conference game. The Bulldogs come into the game with a 1-5 season mark. Winslow Coach Art Griffith said he will send Coe Kirby, Rory Whipple and Monte Gill to the rubber in todays contest.

Our pitching is starting to come around. If it stays the way it has been in recent games, we should be a vastly improved ball club, Griffith said. The Bulldogs coach said the teams defense in the field has been steadily improving. He added that he has made several changes in the field to shore up the infield and the outfield. Defensively, were getting over some of the mistakes we made in earlier games.

With some changes, we should correct those mistakes, Griffith said. Griffith said he has moved Charles Anderson from second base to center field to give the Bulldogs more speed in the outfield. He added that Mike Laur will take over at second base. Laur has very good hands and has progressed to the point that he needs a chance to play, Griffith said. Paul Capps will handle the catching duties for Winslow.

Bert Mead will play first base, Laur at second, Scott Colbath will be at third base and Wayne Garner will play shortstop. Mark Stewart will be in left field, Anderson in center and Henry Marquez will play right field. Griffith said the Bulldogs need to have a hot day at the plate to turn things around this season. If we start swinging the bat, things could come around our way this game, Griffith said. Colbath leads the Bulldogs' hitting attack with a .533 batting average.

Anderson is hitting at .474 and Stewart is contributing a .467 average.
