The SUN, Flagstalt. Arizona Friday, November 2, 19739 Lumberjacks Sanford Has Played Them A ll CLASSIFIED DEADLINE DEADLINE FOR LINE CLASSIFIED ADS IS 12:00 NOON THE DAY BEFORE PUBLICATION four years who will play their final home game Saturday against defending Big Sky Champ Montana State at 1:30 p.m., include Arizonans Kino Flores, defensive end from Hayden; fullback Jim Bullard, Camp Verde; kicker Gary Galatti, Tucson (Amphitheatre), defensive tackle Eric Schrader, Tucson (Sahuaro); and defensive back Ed Jones from Mechanicsburg, Pa. Quarterback Chip Ellwanger of Kingman and end Todd John of Benson ended their careers earlier because of surgery. As far as competition goes, Sanford feels hes played' against some outstanding ball players in his four years at NAU. Two years ago there were six linemen drafted by the pros and there will be some to go this year, continued the transplanted Minnesotan who has been in Arizona since he was one year old.

Tim Sanford Snowsharks Face Prescott Crew If anyone on the 1973 Northern Arizona University football team has an accurate appraisal of how far the Lumberjacks have come this year in football, it has to be senior offensive guard Tim Sanford who played his prep football at Phoenix St. Marys. Since moving into the starting lineup in the next-to-last game his freshman year, Sanford has been on the field for all but about 15 offensive downs not only has he watched the action from a close-up angle, hes been in on most of it. Despite playing a rough schedule, we've all made steady improvement each year and we are now set to finish out with a strong finish and get a winning year to close out with, commented Sanford. A tough schedule is something of an understatement.

By the time the history books are closed at the end of the 1973 NAU season on Thanksgiving day, Sanford and the other Lumberjack players who have been on the scene since freshmen will have played 41 games an overwhelming 26 will have been against teams which were nationally ranked during the season which the Lumberjacks met them. Last year NAU carved out a 3-8 mark against a schedule which found NAU doing combat with 10 of 11 teams which were nationally ranked at one time or another during the year. This fall NAU will meet no fewer than six teams which were ranked at one time or another in the top 20 of the College Division Poll. So, it hasn't been easy for Sanford and his teammates. NAU joined the Big Sky the summer of 1970 Sanford's first year at NAU.

Its been a long, hard struggle and even though they didn't produce outstanding won-loss results, its been this group thats helped lay some foundations. Sanford called "Fo by his teammates, carries a history major and a. math minor and he wants to coach when he completes his playing days. He acquired the nickname in two stages "Sanfo, finally shortened to just Fo. One of the best technique blockers in college football, Sanford puts his 5-10, 225-pound frame to effective use every time he lines up in his three-point stance.

He played at St. Marys during their moments of glory. He was a member of teams which won state championships (AAA) in 1967, and 1968 and his senior year St. Marys lost the state title to Phoenix, Central, 14-7. Sanford played against several of his NAU teammates while in high school center Terry Hoerner (Brophy), linebacker Billy Wagner (Salpointe), defensive end Bruce Ivor (Central), offensive tackle Gil Ramos (Tucson High) and reserve defensive tackle George Kagele (Prescott).
