LOCAL NEWS Arizona Daily Sun A'- Sunday, Dmmilier 2, 2007 www.azilailyMin.toni i contactUs i Gas station off-limits to gravel truck U-turns said, Thats the cost of doing business, you know. Everything we do has wears and tears. Thats the cost of doing business. They tear up my place too, when they pull in. The Otto drivers might return in a couple weeks, Sampson said.

When in the Page area, they have been helping prepare a road near the small community of Navajo Mountain on the Utah border for paving next summer. A ruling by city officials has left the owner of one of Pages oldest gas stations wondering what he will tell about 30 gravel truck drivers from the -Valley when they return to Page soon. The drivers have been fueling their trucks at Sunshine Fuel as part of a gravel-hauling operation.

They had been making U-turns on South Na vajo Drive to maneuver their trucks into gas pump bays at Dulays station at South Navajo and Lake Powell Boulevard. But the U-turns are tearing up the road surface and posing safety risks near Page Middle School, Police Chief Tom Hain said this week. Hain said Public Works Director Cliff Linker told the Mesa-based company, Otto Trucking, that its drivers can no longer make the U-turns. I drove through there one day not long after that and school was getting out, Hain said Tuesday. Five cars were coming in each direction, and a school bus was approaching, and the driver made a U-turn in front of the school bus.

I gave him a written warning. David Sampson, a field supervisor for Otto, said he told his drivers they must comply with the direction they are receiving from Page. We told the driveres to go around the block, Sampson said Thursday. The thing about it is, well work with them. They can go around the block and come in.

Hain said he has not recom--mended any alternate routes for the drivers, just that U-turns on South Navajo are not permitted.
